SMART PRISONS

TRACKING, MONITORING & CONTROL

24–26.3 2023 | Conference | SMART PRISONS
Studio 1 · Kunstquartier Bethanien · Mariannenplatz 2 · 10997 Berlin

Investigating systems of surveillance around prisons, detention centres and borders, and the effects of technological violence and discrimination directed at migrants, activists, and dissidents in Europe and worldwide.

SMART PRISONS connects artists, activists, human rights advocates, tech experts, and critical thinkers around the topics of automatised tracking and surveillance in the framework of prisons and detention centres: Artist Sean Vegezzi investigates the giant floating detention centre VCBC in New York; indian journalist Srishti Jaswal reports on being persecuted by the state and online trolls for her writing on muslim minorities; we look into the decade long grassroots forensic investigation into the G8 Genoa 2001 demonstrations, police brutality and torture; Researcher Petra Molnar investigates the automatisation of border controls, Stella Assange, Kevin Gosztola and Stefania Maurizi reports on the case of Julian Assange (+ screening of Ithaka); Workshops on open source investigations & forensics covering G8 Genoa 2001 and the ISIS Prison Break. Curated by Tatiana Bazzichelli.
