Warming up to our 21st conference BORDERS OF FEAR: Migration, Security & Control (27-29 November 2020, Studio 1, Kunstraum Kreuzberg / Bethanien), tonight we’ll hear from two initiatives working on a welcoming and human-rights based migration and refugee policy: Emergency and Mediterranea.

National governments try to stop migration by all means, often illegally pushing back people migrating and seeking refuge, and criminalising solidarity. They choose not to address the root causes of conflicts and inequalities, which force people to flee and cross borders. To disrupt this narrative, the medical NGO EMERGENCY will present its work in war-torn areas and its projects based on a culture of peace, solidarity and respect for human rights. The meetup will also feature Mediterranea from the initiative From the Sea to the City, through which several organisations joined forces to demand a new European human-right based migration policy, in which municipalities and civil society are central actors.

Program - starting from 19:00:

  • Introduction to the conference Borders of Fear: Migration, Security & Control

  • EMERGENCY: Medicine, Human Rights and Equality

  • Mediterranea and the From the Sea to the City initative

  • Collective discussion

Speakers

Emergency / Lorin Decarli (IT/DE)
Emergency is an international NGO providing free of charge, high-quality medical and surgical care to victims of war and poverty, which campaigns forcefully against the root causes of conflicts and human suffering. Lorin Decarli is an ambassador for Emergency, next to working as jurist for an international law firm and as external lecturer at the Humboldt University for Italian Law. https://en.emergency.it/

Mediterranea / Serena Manno (IT/DE)
Mediterranea is a platform of different initiatives of civil society coming to the central Mediterranean after the NGOs have been forced to leave in consequence of being criminalized by political rhetoric, even though no inquiry has ever come to any conviction. The action of Mediterranea is moral disobedience and civil obedience. Disobedience to the nationalist and xenophobic public discourse and to the interdiction of witnessing what is happening in the Mediterranean; but obeying to the constitutional and international law, the law on the seas and general human rights, including the obligation of saving those who are in danger and bringing them to a safe harbor.
